{"id":45741,"date":"2026-03-10T14:09:31","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T14:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.globalafricanetwork.com\/?p=45741"},"modified":"2026-03-10T14:43:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T14:43:48","slug":"spotlight-on-west-coast-district-municipality-wcdm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalafricanetwork.com\/featured\/spotlight-on-west-coast-district-municipality-wcdm\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight on West Coast District Municipality (WCDM)\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap dropcap2\">S<\/span>trategically positioned along South Africa&#8217;s Atlantic coastline, WCDM spans 31,101 km\u00b2, offering direct ocean access, proximity to Cape Town (Africa&#8217;s largest urban economy), and N7 highway links to Namibia and the Northern Cape.<\/p>\n<p>Key assets include Saldanha Bay Port\u2014Africa&#8217;s deepest natural harbour\u2014for bulk exports such as iron ore, supporting oil, gas, and maritime services. The district includes five municipalities: Matzikama, Cederberg, Bergrivier, Saldanha Bay, and Swartland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the WCD generated R47.1-billion in GDPR (Gross Domestic Product per Region), contributing 5.1% to the Western Cape economy. It supported 182,346 jobs (7.1% of provincial employment). FDI since 2003: R631.7m (1,504 jobs).<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Key projects:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Matzikama Aquaculture Zone (R600m\u2013R1bn),<\/li>\n<li>Clanwilliam Smart Town (R450m),<\/li>\n<li>Hopefield Museum (R6m),<\/li>\n<li>green hydrogen initiatives (multi-billion scale potential).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Planning for Growth\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>The Een Weskus \/ One West Coast Plan 2025-2050 (revised Nov 2025) and Spatial Development Framework (2020) guide sustainable development, focusing on nodes such as <strong>Saldanha-Vredenburg<\/strong> and the <strong>N7\/Olifants corridors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Under-supply of social facilities (e.g., 40 primary schools) creates <strong>opportunities for education\/health investments<\/strong>. Research showed only 15% of South African municipalities had investment profiles at the time.<\/p>\n<p>However, limited financial and human resources have hindered digital promotion and investment attraction.
